Description of Courtyard Retreat
Idyllically located just forty yards from the quayside of the historic walled town of Berwick upon Tweed, Courtyard Retreat is a newly refurbished ground floor bijou apartment for two. Thought to date from the early 18th century this Grade 11 listed property is probably the earliest surviving granary in the town. Situated within the quay walls, this red sandstone gem was given a new lease of life by Berwick Preservation Trust in the 1980s and converted into individual and quirky apartments. The apartment looks onto a quiet courtyard garden, with a table and chairs at which to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine, and is a gentle stroll from unspoilt Bridge Street where there are traditional pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. A permit for parking is available for visitors to use but travelling by car isn’t essential; the East Coast mainline railway station is a just ten minute’s walk away. Take the train north to the festival city of Edinburgh or south to the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, both with a journey time of around forty five minutes.
